Federer Inducted into International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport

Roger Federer was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on a gorgeous Saturday night in Newport, Rhode Island, alongside former pro player Mary Carillo, marking the culmination of days of events at the Hall of Fame.

Record Turnout Honors Legends

Hundreds witnessed the ceremony at the historic Horseshoe Court, while thousands more gathered nearby at an enormous watch party. The event included Friday night’s Fit For Fame Blazer Presentation Dinner, where Federer and Carillo received their custom Brooks Brothers blazers.

Newport’s Historic Significance

The ITHF’s location in the former Newport Casino athletic complex, designed by McKim, Mead, & White, holds significant historical importance, having hosted early lawn tennis championships and the Newport Jazz Festival, including a memorable performance by Bob Dylan and Joan Baez in 1963.

Federer’s Reflections

Before the ceremony, Federer greeted fans at the watch party and responded to a father’s question about nurturing his daughter’s tennis aspirations with a humorous, “Four—it’s a little late, isn’t it? I started at three.” Later, surrounded by his family and friends, Federer described feeling “kind of nervous” despite his usual relaxed demeanor.

Carillo’s Induction

Mary Carillo was inducted first, with Billie Jean King presenting the honor. Carillo shared a moving and humorous speech detailing her journey into tennis, recalling her childhood friendship with John McEnroe, who grew up nearby in Queens.
