Sustainability Takes Center Stage in Fashion as 60+ Brands Pledge Net Zero Emissions by 2040
The fashion industry's focus on sustainability has waned in recent years, with brands prioritizing profits over the planet's well-being. However, a new initiative, The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition, aims to reignite the conversation and drive meaningful action. Over 60 leading brands, retailers, manufacturers, and innovators have joined the coalition, committing to reach net zero emissions by 2040.

Stella McCartney, a long-time advocate for change, is among the prominent signatories. "The conversation has been happening for a long time now," she tells Vogue. "It's a big problem to solve, and it does take care and commitment." While previous initiatives like the UN Fashion Charter and G7 Fashion Pact made similar commitments, momentum has stalled, with some brands failing to follow through.
The Climate Pledge Fashion Coalition differs by focusing on tangible solutions. "This feels like a real shift in a very solutions-driven direction," McCartney explains. The coalition aims to scale up innovative materials and technologies, such as vegan leather alternatives, by encouraging brands to commit to minimum orders and working with the World Economic Forum to secure private investment.
Key priorities include supporting start-ups like Mylo and Piñatex, which have promising sustainable materials but struggle to gain traction. "The breakthrough materials already exist. What doesn't exist yet is the demand to make them affordable," says Kara Hurst, Amazon's chief sustainability officer, which co-founded The Climate Pledge.
With the fashion industry's significant environmental impact, the coalition's efforts come at a critical time. By working together and driving demand for sustainable solutions, these 60+ brands hope to make a meaningful difference and ensure a more eco-friendly future for fashion.
